London

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It’s one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is over 8 million people. London is situated on the river Thames. It was founded more than two thousand years ago.
There are four parts in London: the West End, the East End, the City and Westminster.
The heart of London is the City, its financial and business centre. Few people live here, but over a million people come to the City to work. There are many offices, companies and banks in this part of the capital. The heart of the City is the Stock Exchange. The Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral are situated in the City.
Westminster is an administrative centre of London. Westminster Abbey is the place where kings and queens have been crowned and many famous people were buried (Newton, Darwin, Chaucer, Dickens, Tennyson, Kipling, etc.).
Across the road from Westminster Abbey is Westminster Palace, the seat of the British Parliament. The Towers of the Houses of Parliament stand high above the city. The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big bell, known as "Big Ben".
To the west of Westminster is the West End, the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is the symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, shops, restaurants, clubs, and theatres are situated there.
The Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. It was named in memory of Admiral Nelson's victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson's Column stands in the middle of the square.
To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. Most of the plants and factories are situated there.
The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. The palace was built in 1703 by the Duke Buckingham. The daily ceremony of the Changing of the Guard takes place in its courtyard.
There are many museums in London. For example, the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum. The British Museum is the biggest museum in London. The museum is famous for its library — one of the richest in the world.
There are many beautiful parks in London. St James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens are linked together and form above 300 hectares of parkland in the heart of London.
By the day the whole of London is busy. At night, offices are quiet and empty, but the West End stays alive, because this is where Londoners come to enjoy themselves. There are two opera houses here, several concert halls and many theatres, as well as cinemas. In nearby Soho the pubs and restaurants and nightclubs are busy half the night.
It’s impossible to describe all the places of interest in London. The best way to know this great city is to visit it.
Watch it! It's like you've already been there!

Topic "Geographical Position and Climate of the U.K."

Geographical Position and Climate of the UK.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. They lie to the north-west of Europe. The British Isles are separated from the continent by the English Channel.
The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, the central part, occupies the most of the island of Great Britain. To the north lies Scotland and Wales is to the west of the country. The fourth part is called Northern Ireland. Each part has its capital. The capital of England is London, Wales has Cardiff, Scotland has Edinburgh and the capital city of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
Great Britain is a country of forests and plains. There are no high mountains in this country. Scotland is the most mountainous region with the highest peak, Ben Nevis. The rivers of Great Britain are not long. The longest rivers are the Thames and the Severn. The capital of the United Kingdom, London, stands on the banks of the river Thames. As the country is surrounded by many seas there are some great ports at the seaside: London, Glasgow, Plymouth and others.
Wales is a country of lakes.
Seas and oceans influence the British climate which is not too cold in winter but never hot in summer. The climate in Britain is usually described as cool, temperate and humid.
The weather in Britain changes very quickly. One day may be fine and the next day may be wet. The morning may be warm and the evening may be cool. Therefore it is natural for the people to use the comparison "as changeable as the weather" for a person who often changes his or her mood or opinion about something.
The weather is the favourite topic of conversation in Britain. When two Brits are introduced to each other, if they can't think of anything else to talk about, they will talk about weather.
The English also say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when in rains all day long. Sometimes it rains so heavily that they say "It's raining cats and dogs". Rainfall is more or less even throughout the year.
So, we can say that British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid and changeable. That means that it is never too hot nor too cold. Winters are extremely mild. Snow may come but it melts quickly. In winter the cold is a humid cold, not of the dry variety.
British people say: "Other countries have a climate, in England we have weather."

What can I do?
I think that Ukraine is one of the dirtiest countries in the world. In Ukraine almost every family has a car. And fumes of cars are very dangerous. Our factories, cars, trains and planes make the air dirty, so the atmosphere is polluted.
I believe that one day somebody will invent energy that doesn’t have fumes. Or people will use renewable energy, for example solar energy, wind energy or hydro-electric dams. I know that these energies aren’t so powerful, but we can use it sometimes, for example for cookers.
I think that right now we need new energy, because oil and coal are disappearing. All countries will be in the economic crisis, if we don’t find new energy!
I know that the world is getting hotter because of us! When the sun shines, everything gets hot and the dirt stops the hot air from going up to the sky. Because the hot air has nowhere to go, everything gets hotter.
Our world is warmer than it was one hundred years ago. Hot countries may become drier and the people who live there won’t be able to grow enough food. Ice in cold areas is changing to water because of higher temperatures. When this happens, the sea levels become higher. Some towns near the sea may have a problem soon.
We can help if we stop making the air dirty but we must do something fast!
In addition, not many people understand that they are polluting environment. They are dropping litter on the streets. In my opinion drop litter or rubbish in the dustbin isn’t hard it’s easy.
I think that there must be group of people who will pursue the people who drop litter in the streets. Finally there must be more bins in the streets. And, of course, don’t cut down trees!!! Grow trees, they clean the air!
I always drop litter into the bins and ask my friends to do the same. Maybe when I grow up somebody will invent clean and powerful energy.
I’m sure everything is in our hands, in the hands of people. I call up: Protect the environment, save our nature!

The first topic that you have to learn.

The Earth.

Long ago, before the first human was born, before the first tree began reaching for the sun, her life began.
She breathes and grows. Her blood rushes through her veins. She can speak, she can feel pain. She can feed us when we are hungry and she can heal us when we are sick. She has the power to give us energy and to make us smile. She is not a thing, she is the Earth, and there is the reason we call her mother.
Every day 19 more species disappear forever. But thanks to our efforts whales are beginning to return. The Bald Eagle is off the danger at least. And one million acres or rain forests were protected forever. We only have one planet. We only have one chance. Our mother needs our help. Do something! Anything!
